Pomegranate Surplus in Spain

There are tons of pomegranates coming from Spain this year.  Favorable climate conditions have contributed to a 30% increase in pomegranate production in the Elche region of Spain.  This is great for European pomegranate consumers who will see this surplus decrease prices for pomegranate fruit.  Spanish officials attribute the success to new irrigration systems installed by my pomegranate producers.

Pomegranate Benefits Over Poppy Benefits

In Afghanistan, pomegranates are beginning to replace poppies, used for making opium and heroin, as a staple crop in the region.  In Afghanistan, the pomegranate is known as anar.  As the article mentions, the pomegranate is somewhat trendy in Europe and the United States, mostly because of the health benefits of the fruit.
